Chapter 4

Amanda - Bed and Breakfast

A m,Hi Amanda.

Hi, thank you for wanting to hear my story.

It's my pleasure. It's okay if we call you Amanda, isn't it?

Oh yes, that's fine. I've told a few of my friends of what happened so I don't mind people I don't know hearing about it. Even with my real name.

Good. So tell us a bit about yourself.

Well, I am in my mid forties. I have lived in this little seaside town all my life and have run this bed and breakfast for about twenty years. My husband is a long-distance lorry driver, driving to destinations in Europe and back. We really took on the bed-and-breakfast as a good investment and really for something for me to do when he was away. Also a bit of company as he would be away for between seven and fifteen days, depending on what loads the haulage company had picked up.

n

Not as much as other married couples, I guess. They maybe this was a good thing in our case. We were both probably quite content in our own company. Not that we disliked each other's company, it was just that we didn't need to be a couple all the time. It sounds as if this was quite cold, but it wasn't. Although we had different interests, and even different programs who would want to watch on TV, it was a good marriage. It might not suit everyone, but it suited us fine.

Didn't you miss the intimacy?

I suppose we did at first. But I think the less you have of it, the less you want of it. We,, of course had a bit of a fumble when he came home but that had all but petered out.

So, what happened to cause this confession.

I took a booking for a young lad who was coming to the town to attend an interview to see if he would get a place at the local university. The University is on a campus on its own and our little town is a short train drive away. I thought nothing of it and took the booking, which was for a few months away, and busied myself with the usual jobs of the day.

So just a normal booking?

Yes, just another name and contact number on the spreadsheet. Nothing out of the ordinary.

To get to the meat of the story, we will fast forward a couple of months when there was a ring on the doorbell. Thinking this would be the young lad who was booked in, as he said he would be catching the 3 o'clock train, I made my way to the front door. It was Alfred, and I welcomed him in.

So, was there anything special about him when you first met him?

No, I don't think so. To be honest, I did not take a lot of notice. Being a host is all about the cheery smile and a welcoming persona. Guests come and go on a sometimes nearly daily basis. You don't really have time to take much notice.
